The Senior Stampede kicked off on September 17, 2013 will a hoot and a holler! Sherriff Joseph Tillery lead out in the fun at the fifth annual event for Southeastern New Mexico senior adults. With a shoot out at Geritol Corral, the All American Senior Futility, Tom Perry fiddlin' and singing', and Lonnie and Brook Owens recitin' poetry, smiles were seen all over the TLC at First Baptist Church in Artesia.
This year’s event, Senior Stampede, featured Tom Perry, who has been a professional musician for 40 years, having worked as the fiddler for country & western stars Ray Price, Johnny Rodriquez, the Louisiana Hayride, and many others. Some years back, Tom came to a point in his life where he realized he was not honoring God with his music. Recommitting his life, music, and songwriting to God, Tom now travels throughout the southwest playing Christian concerts. Using his God-given skills and professional experience as a fiddler, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Tom's southwestern style entertains and ministers to all. Tom serves as the chaplain of the Taos Ski Valley during the winter, and lives in Angel Fire, New Mexico, with his wife and two children.
Lonnie and Brook Owens presented cowboy poetry by their late father Ray Dean Owens, some that were rib tickling and some that brought tears.
The Children’s Home’s own Nellie Bell the mule also attended the Stampede. Cowboys and Cowgirls were lined up to share a picture with Nellie Bell, and to make a donation to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home in Portales.
The delicious lunch was prepared by the Chuck Wagon Iron Man’s crew of Sandia Baptist church, in Albuquerque. Hash slinger Garland Peek headed up this crew and sure rustled up some good ‘ol grub.
